WPMA Alumnus Cellist Ethan Nie Named a Woodruff Scholar, Emory University’s Highest Honor

Congratulations to Ethan Nie, a recent WPMA graduate and student of Martin Gueorguiev, who has been named one of just 24 Robert W. Woodruff Scholars in Emory University’s Class of 2030. The Woodruff Scholarship is Emory’s highest merit honor, covering the full cost of an undergraduate education for four years — and Ethan enters the class as a Woodruff Music Scholar.

The scholarship honors Robert W. Woodruff, the longtime Coca-Cola president whose landmark $105 million gift to Emory in 1979 transformed the university. Woodruff Scholars are selected for academic achievement, character, and significant leadership and community engagement — a recognition of the whole student, not a test score.

At WPMA, Ethan studied cello with Martin Gueorguiev through his graduation this spring, serving as principal cellist of the Emory Youth Symphony Orchestra, and winning numerous other youth orchestra, chamber music, GHP, GMTA, and MTNA auditions and awards over the years. Beyond the cello he was co-president of the Notes of Joy student service club, a member of his school’s golf team, and a published researcher. At Emory he plans to study neuroscience and behavioral biology on the pre-med track. Congratulations, Ethan!
