Chamber Music Program

Listen, Perform, Connect

Chamber music is one of the most refined forms of musical collaboration. Each semester, a small number of ensembles are selected by application to study the great chamber repertoire with WPMA faculty and visiting artists, rehearsing and performing together throughout the semester.

Chamber Music Program Overview

Chamber ensembles at WPMA receive coaching from our experienced faculty and guest artists, participate in masterclasses, and present multiple concerts each semester. The program is thoughtfully designed for advanced middle and high school students who are committed to deepening their ensemble skills and musical communication through small-group collaboration.

Program highlights include:

  • Weekly rehearsals with your chamber group
  • Regular coaching with WPMA faculty
  • Additional coachings with guest artists
  • Sight-reading parties with faculty and guest artists
  • Local and national competition preparation
  • At least one masterclass each semester
  • Two recitals each semester
  • Opportunities to perform around Atlanta

How It Works

A Semester of Coached Ensemble Work

Weekly coaching

Every ensemble receives a one-hour coaching each week with WPMA faculty and visiting artists. Our most committed groups receive additional coaching as they prepare for major competitions.

Weekly rehearsals

After each coaching, groups move straight into a rehearsal block at the academy to put new ideas into practice. Ensembles are also expected to rehearse on their own every week, typically at the home of the most centrally located member.

How to rehearse

The semester opens with a seminar on how to rehearse chamber music effectively, giving every group the tools to work well on its own.

Performance and masterclasses

Ensembles perform in the Monthly Spotlight Concert Series, play in at least one guest artist masterclass, and are invited to perform beyond the academy.

Competition preparation

WPMA chamber ensembles compete in, and win top prizes at, local and national competitions. Groups with competition goals prepare for them as part of their coaching.

A real commitment

Students are expected to arrive prepared to every rehearsal and coaching. Ensembles that are not prepared may lose performance opportunities.
